The Red River County Genealogical Society’s monthly meeting is Monday (May 14) at 7:00 pm at the Red River County Chamber of Commerce meeting room. Dawn Standridge, research assistant for Wheelock Academy Historic Site at Millerton, OK, will present the program this month.
Wheelock began as a mission day school in 1833 in what was then Indian Territory. In 1884, after some years of inactivity, the academy once again served as an institute for learning. Through many changes in the buildings and the operations of the academy, the last class graduated in 1955. The academy has been on the National Register of Historic Places for many years.
Ms. Standridge will present a complete history of the academy which continues to be operated by the Choctaw Nation. All interested persons are urged to come and enjoy the program.
