MPJHS competes in UIL Junior High Academic Meet

Mount Pleasant Junior High School 7th and 8th graders competed in an online UIL Junior High Academic Meet at the beginning of February and brought home multiple medals and ribbons.

Mount Pleasant Junior High earned four team awards. The 8th-grade Music Memory Team of Tanner Marshall, Christian Johnson, Kate Ball, and Maleah Duenez took 1st place as a team. The 8th-grade Editorial Writing team of Johnson, Ball, Jazlynn Juarez, and Diya Desai team won 2nd place overall, and Johnson, Ball, Juarez, and Desai also took 3rd place as a team for 8th grade Ready Writing. And the 7th-grade Editorial Writing team of Ava Fite, Alondra Ruiz, Brissia Alvarez, and Mallory Peel won 3rd place overall.

Numerous students earned individual medals:

7th Grade

Editorial Writing: Brissia Alvarez—4th place

Ready Writing: Ava Fite—6th place

8th Grade

Editorial Writing: Christian Johnson—3rd place; Kate Ball—4th place; Diya Desai—6th place 

Ready Writing: Jazlynn Juarez—3rd place; Diya Desai—6th place 

Music Memory: Maleah Duenez—1st place; Christian Johnson—2nd place; Tanner Marshall—3rd place

“Our students have been practicing before and after school with their coaches for the last several months,” said MPJH Assistant Principal Todd Daniel. “It is always great to see how excited the students are before, during, and after the competition. It never fails that they will talk about doing even more events the next year because they had such a good experience competing academically against surrounding schools.”

MPJH UIL coaches include Phillip Sweeden (Maps, Graphs, and Charts), Karen Stayton (Dictionary Skills), Josh Miles (Music Memory), Windy Meurisse (Number Sense), Kendyl Bowers (Mathematics), Jared Erickstad (Social Studies), Launa McCord (Editorial Writing) and Randee Dyer (Ready Writing).
