NTCC – Sports

NTCC Softball Picks Up Road Wins

Northeast Texas Community College Softball hit the road to Poteau, Oklahoma, to take on Carl Albert State College and came away with two wins on the day. NTCC would win game one 14-1 and game two by a score of 14-9.

Freshman Daphne Bogenschutz (White Oak, Texas) would be in the circle in game one and pick up her first collegiate career win. Daphne pitched a complete game giving up just one run on five hits and striking out 9.

NTCC got things going early when Haley McAlexander (New Boston, Texas) walked and advanced to second on a stolen base. Then, Jodi Dehart reached second on an error by the left fielder placing runners on second and third with one out for Tinsley Love (Van Alstyne, Texas). Love would launch a three-run home run, her first of her collegiate career, to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead.

NTCC would add three more runs in the second inning when Dehart started a two-out rally reaching base on an error by the shortstop. Love would walk to put two runners on for the Eagles. First, Shea Nelson (Hughes Springs, Texas) would single to score Dehart, and then Abby Russ (Hooks, Texas) would single to drive in Love and Nelson to increase the lead to 6-0.

After allowing one run in the fourth inning, NCC would put things away in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs in the frame. First, back-to-back singles by Love and Nelson and a walk by Russ loaded the bases. Next, Kailey Hancock (Lufkin, Texas) picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to left field. Then, Jalissa Alvarez (Mount Pleasant, Texas) would walk to load the bases again for the Eagles and bring up Johnae Robinson (Pollock, Texas) to single to right-center and score two more runs. Kelsi Dotts (Rowlett, TX) came in for Love, drew a walk, and later scored when Lani Green (Kilgore, TX) pinch hit for Russ and singled to drive in the final run game.

The Eagle hitters would pound out 12 hits in the game to make Carl Albert pay for the six walks issued by their pitchers.

Game Two, Sarah Overholtzer (Bellflower, California) got the start and picked up the first collegiate win of her career. Overholtzer pitched five innings of work, giving up three runs and striking out five. Presley Swindell (Durant, OK) and Bogenschutz would finish the contest in the circle for the Eagles.

Offensively for the Eagles, they would get on the board in the first inning with three runs scored. McAlexander, Love, and Nelson would all reach base and score in the first inning to put the Eagles up 3-0.

Love and Russ would score in the third inning to put NTCC up 5-0. After giving up one run in the bottom of the third, the Eagles answered back with another run in the top of the fourth when Emma Farquhar (Hooks, Texas) doubled and later scored on a single by Dehart to bring the lead to 6-1.

The Vikings of Carl Albert would not go away quickly in game two and scored again in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to 6-2. NTCC answered right back with two more runs in the fifth. Alvarez would single and later score on an RBI single by Farquhar, who scored a few batters later when Dehart put the ball in play and forced an error by the shortstop. The Eagles would push the lead to 8-2, heading to the bottom of the fifth inning. Carl Albert again added a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead to 8-3.

Both teams would have a big sixth inning, with NTCC scoring four runs to increase the lead to 12-3. However, the Eagles needed the cushion as the Vikings scored their final six runs to bring the game to 12-9. Nelson and Russ would each get on base in the seventh and add two more runs for insurance for NTCC to put the game away 14-9.

NTCC will travel to Lufkin, Texas, on February 12 to face former conference opponent Angelina College in a doubleheader matchup. The next scheduled home game is Thursday, February 17, against Hill College, with a 2:00 pm start.

Daphne Bogenschutz (White Oak HS) would get the start in the circle for the Eagles before giving way to Presley Swindell (Durant, OK) and Lani Green (Kilgore, TX) in game one.

Game Two, Sarah Overholtzer (Bellflower, CA) would get the start and go five innings before giving way to Bogenschutz for the final two innings of work.

After falling behind 5-0, NTCC got things going offensively in the bottom of the second when Jalissa Alavarez (Mount Pleasant HS) would get base with a one-out single. Alvarez would steal second base and score when Robinson hit a two-out double to left-center field. The Eagles would keep the two-out rally going when Haley McAlexander (New Boston HS) would double to score Robinson. Nelson would follow her double with a single to score McAlexander to cut the lead to 5-4 for NCTC.

The offensive run for the Eagles ended, and North Central added one more run in the third inning, two in the fourth, and one final run in the sixth to defeat the Eagles 9-4.

NTCC Baseball Splits With Grayson College

On Monday, Northeast Texas Community College Baseball kicked off the 2022 spring season with a doubleheader against Grayson College on the NTCC campus. NTCC and Grayson split the series, with the Eagles taking game one 5-3 and Grayson winning the second game 9-2.

Game One, Grayson would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning after a lead-off single, followed by another single, double, and one last single to plate two runs and take the lead.

The lead for Grayson would be short-lived as NTCC got things going in the third inning, scoring five runs to go ahead 5-2. Bryce Johnson (McKinney HS) would reach second base on a two-base error. Johnson moved to third base on a Connor Chavez (Dallas Jesuit HS) single to the left. Grayson would manage to get two outs, but Nico Baumbach (Euless Trinity HS) would make them pay with a three-run home run to right field. The pitch hit Cameron Loy (Mansfield HS) in the next at-bat. Seth Cox (McKinney HS) would make Grayson pay, hitting a two-run home run to Left/Center field to lead 5-2 for NTCC.

Grayson would scratch out one more run in the fourth inning with a solo home run to score 5-3.

Austin Burda (Nolan Catholic HS) would get the start for the Eagles and go two innings giving up four hits and striking out three batters before giving way to his bullpen. Spence Mats (Atascocita HS) would pitch two innings, adding another three strikeouts and picking up the win for NTCC. Griffin Binkley (Mansfield Legacy HS) and Camden Sargent (Brazosport Christian HS) would also see action in game one. The Eagle pitchers combined to give up just five hits and struck out nine while walking eight batters in the seven-inning contest.

Game Two, NTCC would get on the board first in the bottom of the first inning when Hank Warren (Lufkin Hudson HS) would score after reaching base on a fielder’s choice. Warren scored on a Cameron Loy single to go up 1-0.

Grayson College got on the scoreboard in the third inning following a costly walk and error by NTCC. However, the Eagles answered back in the bottom half of the third and tied the game at 2-2. Warren would lead off with a single and later score his second run when Loy again singled to center field to drive in the run. Unfortunately for NTCC, this was the last offensive output they would see in game two.

Grayson would add two runs in the fourth, four runs in the sixth, and one final run in the seventh to win 9-2. Chase Richter (Cypress Woods HS) would start in game two and then give way to the bullpen after two innings of work. George Austin (Dallas Jesuit HS), Logan Asay (Frisco Wakeland HS), Brock Shoffner (Bridgeland HS), Aidan Griggsby (Alvin Shadowcreek HS), and James Laird (Hebron HS) all pitched in game two. They combined to strike out six while walking four.

NTCC will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, Feb 18 & 19, vs. Cowley Community College from Kansas. Friday will be a doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm, and Saturday will be a single game starting at Noon.
