Sports Update For Tuesday Aug. 27

Tonight in volleyball action, the North Lamar Pantherettes are home against Mt. Pleasant (6:00 pm). Sulphur Springs visits Paris High (6:00 pm). Texas High travels to Prairiland (6:00 pm). Chisum is at Clarksville (5:00 pm). Rivercrest hosts Cumby (6:00 pm) and Trinity Christian is at Detroit (6:00 pm).

This is the week High School Football officially begins. East Texas Broadcasting has you covered. Thursday the Pittsburg Pirates travel to Jefferson at 7:00 pm on KLAKE 97.7. Also on Thursday, Hughes Springs heads to Lufkin to take on Hamshire-Fanett at 7:00 pm on STAR 96.9. Then on Friday night, Mt Pleasant travels to Wylie East at 7:30 pm on KLAKE 97.7, and Mt Vernon is on the road to Bonham on STAR 96.9 at 7:30 pm. Also on Friday, Paul Pewitt will host New Boston, Daingerfield will be at home against Gunter, Gilmer will host Atlanta, Paris is at Pleasant Grove (101.9 KBUS), North Lamar visits Pottsboro (MIX 107.7), Sulphur Springs will host Frisco Wakeland on STAR 95.9 and Rivercrest will be at Chisum.

The Texas A&M University-Commerce football team is ranked No. 13 in the 2019 preseason American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches’ Poll. The Lions went 10–3 in 2018 for their third consecutive year with double-digit victories. A&M-Commerce advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the fourth straight season and the regional semifinal round for the third straight year.

For the third time in four games, the Frisco RoughRiders played into extra innings and came away with a victory, knocking off Springfield 10–7 in 10 innings Monday night. Trailing 7–5 in the ninth, the Riders rallied to tie the game, capped by a two-out RBI single from Brendon Davis. Andretty Cordero had an RBI single as part of a three-run 10th and also homered in a four-run third. His 81 RBIs continue to lead all Double-A hitters. Charles Leblanc homered for the second game in a row and finished with his 32nd multi-hit game of the year.

And the Rangers had the day off. They begin a series in Los Angeles tonight with the Angels on 1490 AM and 96.3 FM KPLT. pregame is at 8:30 with the first pitch at 9:05.

The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to contract terms with veteran quarterback Matt Moore, after learning that backup Chad Henne will need surgery for a broken right ankle. Moore, who hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2017 with the Miami Dolphins, will serve as the top backup to Patrick Mahomes. The 35-year-old played 10 seasons with the Dolphins and Carolina Panthers, starting 30 games and throwing 45 touchdown passes and 36 interceptions. He sat out last season.

A former Penn State team doctor is suing the school, football coach James Franklin, and athletic director Sandy Barbour claiming he was ousted after complaining to school officials about being pressured to clear players to return from injuries. The lawsuit filed Friday by Dr. Scott Lynch in Dauphin County. Lynch was removed from his position as director of athletic medicine in March and replaced by Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, who had previously held the position until 2013.

There’s a ton of College Football slated for Thursday. The biggest game of the night will feature No. 1 Clemson hosting Georgia Tech at 7:00 pm. No. 12 Texas A&M is also in action as they host Texas State at 7:30 pm.
