Childress, Blackwell & Dejean Named ASC Women’s Basketball Players of the Week

East Texas Baptist sophomore Kim Childress, Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore Alicia Blackwell and Concordia Texas senior Jaela Dejean earn Players of the Week for week five of the 2017-18 season.

EAST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Kim Childress, So., F, East Texas Baptist

East Texas Baptist University sophomore forward Kim Childress (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) helped the Tigers to their best start in the NCAA Division III era by pushing their record to 7-1. She averaged 16.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.7 steals per game as they went 2-1 on the week. Childress posted a double-double with 18 points and 13 rebounds in a loss to Whitworth. She also had 20 points and eight rebounds in a 74-48 win against Sul Ross State and 12 points against Schreiner.

CO-WEST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Alicia Blackwell, So., G, Mary Hardin-Baylor

University of Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore guard Alicia Blackwell (McKinney, Texas) recorded the eighth triple-double in American Southwest Conference history with 11 points, 11 rebounds and ten assists in the Cru’s 83-59 win at Ozarks. She also had 10 points and ten boards in a 71-61 victory at UT Tyler to average 10.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game for the week.

CO-WEST DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jaela Dejean, Sr., G, Concordia Texas

Concordia University Texas senior guard Jaela Dejean (Houston, Texas) earned her fifth Player of the Week award of her career by leading the Tornados with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals in their 63-54 win at Ozarks on Sunday. She went 5-for-10 from the field and 7-for-7 at the free throw line in the game.

EAST DIVISION

Louisiana College senior forward Jonika Walton (Biloxi, Mis.) averaged 10.5 points, 14.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals per game off the bench as the Wildcats went 1-1 on the week. Of her 29 rebounds, 16 came on the offensive glass.

The University of Texas at Tyler senior forward Alex Kochner (Clear Lake, Texas) recorded her second double-double of the year after going for 17 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor. She also had three assists and a pair of steals.

University of the Ozarks junior guard Hailey Ostrander (Alma, Ark.) averaged 16.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game in a pair of losses for the Eagles. She hit six three-pointers in the two games.

WEST DIVISION

McMurry University sophomore guard Sarah Doherty (Lubbock, Texas) recorded 18 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals in the War Hawks 58-42 win against Texas Lutheran. She hit 6-of-11 three-point shots in the game.

Hardin-Simmons University senior guard Danie Mabry (Winnsboro, Texas) led the Cowgirls with 23 points in a one-point loss to Texas Lutheran. She hit five three-pointers in the game to go with five rebounds.

Howard Payne University junior guard Valarie Matlock (Azle, Texas) averaged 12.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 4.0 steals per game as the Lady Jackets won three games. She recorded 11 points, five assists and six steals in a win at Belhaven.
