Juneteenth Federal Holiday Today

Today is Juneteenth National Independence Day, a federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The holiday is on the anniversary of the order issued by Major General Gordon Granger in Galveston on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas. Juneteenth was first officially celebrated as a national holiday with a proclamation by President Joe Biden in 2021.
